3rd Annual Student Excellence Award Winners

Every school year-end we ask teachers to submit photos of deserving student projects to us for our Student Excellence Awards. Our staff votes on their favourites and the winners receive accolades in our newsletter and gift cards to West Wind. We always see the value in supporting young woodworking talent and promoting skills in the trades.

We had an amazing collection of submissions this year, it was even harder to judge because there were so many levels and variations in projects. All did fabulous work and the students should be proud! Here are the top projects and some honourable mentions:

Student Excellence Awards 2021!

We asked our shop teachers to nominate their deserving students for a chance to win some recognition and a grand prize of a $100 West Wind gift card. Our judges, employees of West Wind, including those who have completed their joinery apprenticeships had a tough time deciding the lucky prize recipient!

And The Winner Is:

Locklyn Patenaude – Kwalikum Secondary

Locklyn’s grade 11 projects included the garry oak box and the pictured black walnut and multiple wood table! Her teacher, Rob Gibbs, says she is now enrolled in a dual credit cabinetry course VIU for her grad year. Well done Locklyn!

Furniture Collection by Scott Klausen

Scott is not a customer, but worked for us the last few months! He is moving on to bigger and better things so we thought we’d show off his great work as a nice send off. We wish him the best of luck!

Three of them are made from sapele mahogany, eastern maple, and padouk. They are the three projects that I built in high school and the symbols on the end table are on there because I have a fascination in ancient history and ancient mythology so I decided to incorporate some in my work.
