3rd Annual Student Excellence Award Winners

3rd Annual Student Excellence Award Winners

Every school year-end we ask teachers to submit photos of deserving student projects to us for our Student Excellence Awards. Our staff votes on their favourites and the winners receive accolades in our newsletter and gift cards to West Wind. We always see the value in supporting young woodworking talent and promoting skills in the trades.

We had an amazing collection of submissions this year, it was even harder to judge because there were so many levels and variations in projects. All did fabulous work and the students should be proud! Here are the top projects and some honourable mentions:

Another Year – Another Distanced Christmas Staff Luncheon

Another Year – Another Distanced Christmas Staff Luncheon

WWH Christmas Staff Lunch 2021 saw an upgrade from pizza and boutique soda pops.  Our lunch was catered by a local company, Truffles Catering.  They offer a dedicated service, locally-driven & distinctive cuisine.

We made selections from their Grazing Menu.  This included their massive grazing “charcuterie” board of artisan cheeses and cured meats, grilled veggies, olives/pickles, bread/crackers, and homemade condiments.  We included Vegetarian maki rolls for those who swing away from meats and animal by-products and a lovely bowl of crisp homemade root vegetable chips.  Finished by a selection of lovely squares and bars for those with a sweet tooth. What will next hold?!

National Forest Week Contest

National Forest Week Contest

September 19 to 25

BC National Forest Week Coalition was established in 2013, the BC National Forest Week Coalition’s goal is to educate as many BC youths as possible about the different uses and value that we get from our forests including:

  • the production of wood products,
  • to providing local jobs,
  • to a variety of recreation opportunities, and
  • providing spiritual values.

National Forest Week is our opportunity to rally the troops, wave the flag, and showcase the high level of professionalism used in managing the forest resources of BC.

We are participating in NFW’s Art/Photo Contest. There are participation prizes plus the bonus of publicity in our e-Newsletter and Social Media venues.  Send us your artistic interpretation of a “Working Forest”.

Working forests” are defined as forests that are actively managed to generate revenue from multiple sources, including sustainably produced timber and other ecosystem services, and thus are not converted to other land uses such as residential development.

An example of an artistic entry, the possibilities are limited only by your imagination

The contest closes SEPTEMBER 19th, 2021

Hospital Heroes Fundraiser

Helping Our Hospital Heroes

There are those working tirelessly on the front-lines of this pandemic, keeping us safe and healthy. We would like them to know: We see you and we THANK YOU!

Please help us give support to these amazing heroes. For every OLI-NATURA product sold until May 31st, we will donate 10% of the profits to the Hospital Heroes of Victoria by the Victoria Hospitals Foundation.

There are clearly a lot of organizations and charities that need help these days. If you are willing and able we encourage you to visit Canadahelps.org and find other charities to help spread the love & kindness further!

West Wind’s COVID-19 Update on Services

We will update this post with any further changes based on the recommendations of the health authority.

November 24th

In response to BC’s state of emergency, West Wind is continuing to follow the recommended health guidelines imposed on businesses of our nature. This means:

  • ALL VISITORS and employees will be required to wear a mask or suitable face covering while on West Wind’s premises. We reserve the right to refuse entry or service to customers if this action is not taken seriously.
  • WASHROOM FACILITIES CLOSED to the public. To protect the health of our employees, visitors are no longer allowed the use of our washrooms. We apologize for any inconvenience this might cause.

June 8th

As of today, our warehouse is open to the public following our pre-COVID hours: Monday through Friday; 8 am to 4:30 pm, and we are running our full complement of staff.  We have good hygiene protocols in place.  We have lots of hand wipes, sanitizer, and gloves available if you feel so inclined.  Masks are not necessary but we see lots of folks who prefer to use them.  Our office and washrooms continue to be closed to the public but in reality, that’s neither here nor there in your ability to select and purchase wood.  Honestly, commonsense is the one rule of thumb in our warehouse.  Be kind and respectful to staff and other customers. Don’t visit us if you’ve been crossing borders in your travels and did not self-isolate.  If you’re sick, please stay home and get better before venturing out into your community.  Commonsense.

Come and visit us.  We continue to receive new inventory daily.  Lots of new wood choices.  Stay in touch through e-Newsletter, Instagram, and/or Facebook.

May 15th

We are again open Fridays, regular hours. Still maintaining the healthy protocol and social distancing advisories.

April, 1st 2020

First and foremost, we hope all of you and your families are staying safe and healthy during these uniquely challenging times.

We are operational following strict guidelines and sporadically reduced hours.  We strongly urge customers to call in, or place orders by email or use our various social media opportunities. Our warehouse remains open where social distancing is easy and a stringent hygiene protocol is in place.  Our Milling team continues to work with a reduced crew. The office is closed to the public.

We sanitize ‘touchable’ surfaces daily; offering hand sanitizer, wipes and gloves to customers and employees alike.  We encourage regular hand washing; on and off the premises.

Finally, we greatly appreciate everyone’s flexibility as we all adjust our businesses and our lives.  In these unprecedented times, the world has been brought to its knees. And while you may be sitting by yourself in your home, we’re all in this together, and the only certain thing we know is that we are not alone.  We will collectively overcome.

Sincerely,

The West Wind Hardwood Team

March, 23rd 2020

To our Dear Customers,

This is no doubt an incredibly trying time for all businesses, small and large. As it stands West Wind will remain open, but with limited contact with customers. We have implemented a plan that will ensure the safety of our employees as well as our customers who choose to visit us during this time.

We do encourage all customers to order online for the time being, either through the online store, by phone or email. We are here to help support you with any questions or helping select your product. There is now an instant chat feature throughout the website that will connect you to someone here during business hours (8:00-4:30 pm PST).

We will outline here the changes that have been made to operations:

Main Office & Warehouse

Our main warehouse sales office will be closed to the public. Customers needing our attention will be asked to knock on the inner office door (inside the warehouse). We will be taking payment out there as well because this is a much more open space.

All employees are to strictly follow the social distancing and health protocol set out by the Provincial Guidelines. We ask that you also adhere to these when visiting to keep all of us safe.

Milling Department

No changes to our milling operations, employees here do not have regular contact with customers and they wear hand and face protection. Rest assured any milling jobs currently in production will continue as planned, as long as we have employees to run them.

Flooring Gallery

We are recommending customers who are planning to visit our flooring gallery to call or email Lars, larsn@westwindhardwood.com, ahead of time.

Online Orders

Since many of our customers are considered vulnerable to COVID please consider using our online store to order instead of coming to us in person. We are able to choose, pack and ship your orders easily through our online shop. We can quote out material without any payment from you as we check stock, sizes and shipping costs. Contact us if you have any questions and we’ll walk you through the process.

Thank you for your cooperation in this unprecedented crisis. We are confident working together will ease any ramifications that may endure.
