The Taproot Reaches 100 Incredible Issues!! - West Wind Hardwood

Volume 1 of The Taproot was born in October 2005. Seventeen years ago. WOW!! What a ride it’s been.
We are still alive and well; survivors of the last two COVID years. Back then, we talked about the same things we do today and are still passionate about all things wood. So, what has changed?!

We’ve followed the ebb and flow of trends. We have expanded our wood-working machinery and grown our value-added wood products to include all imaginable wild and woolly wood projects; such as live edge waterfall counters, tent poles and portable venue furniture, personal hygiene steam boxes, Vancouver Island-shaped Gift Plaques, World War I Tiger Moth parts (shipped to South Africa and New Zealand), piano parts for Steinway Pianos.

West Wind Hardwood is featured in Ship to Shore magazine, a guide for boaters visiting the beautiful Salish Sea on the West Coast of Canada. We <3 artists, small businesses & entrepreneurs 🙂

We continue to source and stock quality hardwoods and softwoods. But most importantly, we have grown our West Wind family with fine people, and talented people. Jan has mentored six employees through the Joinery Program at BCIT. Three have completed and received their red seals. We continue to see a parade of high school and university students with an interest in woodworking. They are valuable and we look forward to the future. We have an IT Department….of one person 😉 Our IT and social media concerns are managed by one very dedicated, invaluable person.

Let’s have a quick blast through these past seventeen years.  There have been many ‘out-of-office’ bonding opportunities; trade shows, corporate campouts, in-house workshops, tours, meals and sight-seeing extravaganzas.  Our bigger family includes customers and suppliers as well.  We’ve hosted many a gathering at our home. We’ve welcomed suppliers from throughout Canada and Europe.  Business does blend with pleasure.  Business can be fun!!

Faces come and go but you will see many faces that are still with us.  We are proud to have our managers, Joel and Danny.  They have been with us all this time and are the backbone of our milling team; having worked since their high school days.  As the years tripped by, Britney, Tyler and Jonathan joined us, and their years of service are quickly adding up too.  We are a proud family that continues to expand with folks like Dustin; soon to join the apprenticeship program at BCIT. In all, West Wind Hardwood has been proudly supporting all-things wood since 1980.  We tip our hat off to our customers because without you, just where would we be??
