Near & Far: In Memoriam - West Wind Hardwood
ove nielsen and sons

This venue has always been an opportunity to celebrate the Nielsen Family’s passion with wood; whether from their Danish roots so many years ago, or in following their journey across Canada when the family arrived in 1960.

It is with great sadness the Nielsen Family must announce the passing of Ove Tellerup Nielsen; father to sons Jan and Lars (and daughter, Lene).  Ove and son, Jan established West Wind Woodwork in 1980 when the business officially moved to commercial premises in Sidney.  Ove retired from West Wind Hardwood in 1993 handing over his reins to Lars.

Ove Tellerup, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, passed on Wednesday, February 13, 2019. He passed peacefully at home surrounded by love, as he wished.

He was a man of passion and talent. Family and friends were first and foremost; followed closely by his love of woodworking and the sea. He was a true artist whatever the medium: wood (joinery), water (boats), music (accordion), words (stories).

His talent for model shipbuilding brought Ove hours of personal happiness and much public recognition.

He was larger than life, loved dearly and missed greatly.  In lieu of flowers, the family would welcome donations to either the BC Cancer Society or the Heart Stroke Foundation.   A Celebration of Life will be held from 1 – 4 pm on Sunday, March 3 at the family’s home.

  1. My condolences for your loss Lars.
I lost my Danish father in law Hardy Sorensen just a year ago as well. They would have made 1st mates.
Hardy taught me so much as well as a master woodworker.
I believe you know his brother Leif as well. Leif is just now moving to a rest home. He lost his wife Billy last year and is himself becoming very weak.
I am right at home with the Danish survival kit of Akvavit and Carlsberg beer, the licorice, butter, the pulser and of course the herring.
Again, a generation of real artists we have lost.
