Bamboo & Echowood Veneer Plywood Bookcase
by Kay Marshall
This custom made bookcase was built for a customer who needed more space for a growing collection of books.  The bookcase needed to fit in an upstairs bedroom with sloping ceilings, but be easily removable and convertible for other locations, and it was designed to be able to add more shelves as the collection grows.  Choosing sustainable materials (bamboo shelving and Echo Wood veneer plywood for the posts) was important along with creating a distinctive, adaptable and modern design.  The initial idea for this project was based on a photo of the landscape artist Cornelia Hahn Oberlander’s living space along with sketches of woodworker Franco Albini’s 1950’s bookcase.  Brushed stainless tubing was incorporated to provide the book lover with the flexibility to accommodate books of all sizes.
