Mahogany (African)

As the name implies, this wood is grown in Africa. It is the bourgeois cousin of Honduras mahogany. The heartwood varies from light to deep reddish-brown; ribbon-grain is predominant. It is widely used for furniture, cabinet making, general joinery and boat building. The density is approx. 34-36 lbs/ft³.

Scented mahogany,
West African cedar

A close-textured wood from Africa showing salmon pink to pale yellow; changing to reddish brown with age. Interlocking grain can change direction; can be regularly striped; has a light cedar-like scent. It is heavier than other African mahoganies; and reported to be comparable to Oak in strength properties. The International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO) reports that the species is an important source of timber. The species is reported to be secured from regulated sources.

This African wood is an excellent substitute for both Honduras mahogany and teak in the marine industry. The heartwood varies from pink-red to blood red to red-brown. This wood offers lots of straight grain with a density of approx. 39 lbs/ft³.

Another exotic from Hawaii, it is yellow to brown and white mottling.

Maple, Eastern Hard

A domestic wood that is a multi-tasker. Its colour is cream-white with a reddish tinge. The texture is fine and straight. It is a moderately difficult wood to work owing to a high resistance to abrasion and wear with an approx. density of 45 lbs/ft³. All lumber is inspected for sticker staining and selected stock offers bird’s eye figure. It’s the most suitable species for food-related projects.

This is a valued-packed Pacific Northwest wood. Selected stock offers highly figured wood; exceptional for musical instruments. Each figured piece is unique. The density is approx. 34-39 lbs/ft³. Excellent workability.

Oak, Bending Indiana

This is “live” oak specifically used for steam bending under marine applications. Colour is similar to traditional white oak but it has not been kiln-dried. The approx. density is 47 lbs/ft³.

This is truly a Pacific Northwest species that is not commercially harvested, but sometimes good things are made available to us.  It has great steam bending qualities and is a valuable resource in the marine industry.

Domestically grown, this species is synonymous with the word “wood”. The heartwood typically has consistent pink-reddish tinge. It is mostly straight grained and with a coarse texture. The density is approx. 48 lbs/ft³. It is a versatile wood used for flooring, furniture and cabinet making.

Domestically grown, this wood has a “grey” look. It is commonly used in reproduction pieces from the early 1900’s. It is selected in flat sawn and quarter sawn and rift sawn grades. The density is approx. 47 lbs/ft³
